A Manually Cleaned List of Nearby Galaxies from SDSS DR9

We present a sample of 317,018 galaxies at the redshifts 0.003 < z < 0.1 from SDSS DR9. We arrived at the current selection by limiting z as computed by SDSS, filtering out non-galaxy objects, and finally checking for faulty and duplicate objects. This yielded 724,000 objects. Further cleaning steps included removal of quasars and star-like objects, removal of duplicate images using the SDSS DR9 Image List Tool as well as proprietary code. By visual inspection, we selected the best image of each galaxy, which led to a sample of about 360,000 galaxies. Using the SDSS recommendation to avoid typical statistical errors near the spectroscopic flux limit we restricted the sample by stellar magnitude in r-band (modelMag_r < 17.7).

Absolute stellar magnitude in the SDSS r band, calculated as Mr = modelMag_r - 5*log10(DL) - 25 - Extinction_r - kcorrect_r, where modelMag_r - the model magnitudes in a r-band; DL - luminosity distance; Extinction_r - Galactic extinction in r-band; kcorrect_r - k- correction in r-band.
